Starting Out
Like I said, I started quilting about 6 years ago. I was self taught through reading quilt books and magazines for about 3 years. I found out, that in my valley a quilt shop had opened. I signed up for a beginner class to refine my self taught skills. I eventually ended up working there in the shop part time. I have a good eye for fabric. When the ladies would come into the shop, it seemed like everyone liked my choices in fabric. I left there to take other classes at various quilt shops. I wanted to learn more and different techniques. I learned to paper piece, different ways of applique, and more complicated pieced quilts. Now I feel that I can tackle any quilt pattern out there. I have a good friend that quilts with me from time to time. We go to various quilt functions every year. The first one for the year is Road to California. This is the big quilt convention for Califonia that is held at the Ontario Convention Center. We shop till we drop and of course look at the beautiful quilts on display. Then we tell each other that we really do not quilt compared to what we see on display. Our next function is Demo Day down in San Marcos (San Diego area). We go to see what Eleanor Burns has came out with new for the year. Her quilt shop is named Quilt In A Day. Then we have the Southern California Quilt Run. We go all over southern california to the quilt shops on the run. I believe there are anywhere between 30-35 shops on the run. It usually takes us 2 weekends and an overnight stay one weekend to complete. We also shop from all of them. This what we do every year, besides the occasional visits to our local quilt shops for some odds and ends to finish quilts. Yes, I have the quilting bug bad. I have fabric stored all over my house. Drives my husband nuts. I remind people that quilting is good therapy and a lot cheaper than paying for a therapist or doctor.
